Beccles Railway Station
Beccles railway station is a railway station serving the town of Beccles in Suffolk. The station is located on the Ipswich-Lowestoft East Suffolk Line.
The East Suffolk Railway connected Beccles with Ipswich and opened in 1859, incorporating parts of the earlier Halesworth, Beccles and Haddiscoe, and the Lowestoft and Beccles Railways. The Waveney Valley Railway from Tivetshall on the Ipswich to Norwich mainline reached Beccles in 1863 making the town an important junction on the expanding network of the Great Eastern Railway
However, by 1966 the Waveney Valley Line had closed, together with the line to Haddiscoe north across the River Waveney because it had become too expensive to maintain.
The engine shed has recently been demolished (2006) and the island platform is very overgrown. There are still traces of the turntable in the ground, there are plans afoot to restore the island platform at beccles. The restoration of the former mainline from beccles to haddiscoe station has also been considered.
The station is served by National Express East Anglia, who operate services between Ipswich and Lowestoft. All services are operated by diesel multiple units of Classes 153, 156, 170.
Service
There is generally an hourly service from Beccles to Lowestoft eastbound and to Ipswich westbound, with some services continuing onwards to London Liverpool Street using new Turbostar units.
